Noooooooo! Dont paint it, you'll ruin it.

How do you answer the "DON'T PAINT THAT" brigade?

We've all been told, "I can't believe you're going to paint that piece!" Shocked by our decision to cover an old treasure with paint. So, how should you answer?

It's not a valuable piece, the majority of the items I handle are in a state of neglect. The worth of an antique typically increases when it remains in its initial good condition. However, if refinishing is necessary, that suggests the piece does not meet this standard. The antique market has significantly declined - no one wants old furniture anymore, have you noticed any homes still filled with valuable and scarce antiques?

The value of a piece is only determined by the amount someone is willing to pay for it, regardless of what is stated in an online listing. Therefore, if I paid £80 for it, that is likely all its truely worth.

The question I often encounter is whether or not I paint the backs of my pieces. My typical response is no, but there are a few exceptions. Allow me to share with you my top three reasons for this decision.
